Recruitment Companies & Temping

Looking for some work in the fields of labouring / construction / factory work / warehousing/ FIFO? Looking for work in any industry, really?

This email hopefully helps give you a rundown of how you can access some of the temp/casual roles (but still work full-time hours sometimes!) through contacting recruitment companies. It’s not official, it’s just a rough guide – contact recruitment companies for the most accurate and up to date information about how to access work through them J This is just based on my personal experience so far of supporting clients to access work through them!

How it works

  • Recruitment agencies get paid by CLIENTS to find them workers, so that the Client doesn’t have to do it themselves. For example – McDonald’s might be a CLIENT who PAY a recruitment agency to find them kitchen hands and front counter staff, so that McDonald’s don’t have to spend the time doing their own recruitment. The Client tells the recruitment agency what sort of workers they want – skills, qualifications etc. and the recruitment agency goes out and finds willing workers who fit the Client’s criteria!

  • Recruitment agencies get paid by the Clients when they send good workers who show up to shifts, which is why showing up on time to your job is a top priority for recruitment agents – they want to know that you’re reliable!

  • Once you get interviewed and all your ID etc. verified, generally they add you to their books, and will text or call you when a job becomes available – sometimes they send out these texts to lots of people all at once, so the quicker you reply, the better chance you have of getting accepted – first in best dressed they say!

  • The Recruitment Agency generally pays you, not the Client.

What they’re looking for in workers

  • People who SHOW UP – RELIABILITY! This is VERY important. If you can’t make a shift, you must contact both the CLIENT (your supervisor on the job) AND your contact person at the recruitment agency. Let them know ASAP if you are sick or cannot come to work – follow the protocol they give you i.e. text or phone call or email or all 3. Make sure you ask what to do in the event you can’t come to work, and find out who you need to tell.

  • People who are safety focused!

  • People with a White Card (essential for construction roles, you can do it online here, costs $)

  • People who can pass a Drug and Alcohol screen – they sometimes do a pre-placement medical, OR they can randomly test you while you’re working. Most places will terminate your employment immediately if you have a positive test for drugs / alcohol – remember, they take safety seriously!

  • People who have a good attitude – positive and work well in a team

  • People who have previous experience - desirable but not always essential

  • People with good physical fitness and who can do heavy lifting (sometimes, not always)

  • If you get a good name for yourself by working hard, being friendly and having a positive attitude, and showing up on time, it’s highly likely that you may get first priority when new jobs come up, and the Client might keep requesting that the Recruitment agency send you back to them.

Things to know

  • This type of work can result in long days (8 – 10 hours) and be physical in nature – give your body time to rest between shifts, and try to avoid working too many days in a row!

  • Shifts can be based at work locations that are out of the central metro area – if you don’t have a drivers licence it can be more difficult, but not always impossible! Shifts can start early which make public transport difficult – check out the Transperth Journey Planner to see if you can get where you need to go on time each day. See if you can rideshare with other workers when you get to know them, or look at your budget and see whether you can afford to use something like taxi/Uber to get you there in the mornings, or home late.

Who you can contact

Call each agency up and ask to speak to someone in recruitment – explain the type of work you’re looking for and see if you can send through your resume. Make sure to list if you have any special licences or qualifications – driver’s/Forklift and also if you have a White Card. Some of the websites let you submit your resume online, but if you can speak to a real person and get a real email address, then it’s easier to follow up if you don’t hear back within say a week. Following up is professional, and demonstrates you’re keen and motivated to work, so don’t be shy!

Tip: Check that you’re calling the Perth office as some of the companies are nationwide!
